When people ask an AI assistant a money question, which banks get named and which sources get cited?
By Anuj Shahani
I asked five AI assistants the fifty money questions US consumers ask most. Best travel card. Best savings account. Refinance now or wait. Then I read every answer, all 250 of them, and kept score. Who got named? Who got named first? Who got cited?
The assistants backed up their answers with 563 citations. Fourteen pointed to a bank’s own website. That is the citation gap. Banks fill the answers. Review sites fill the sources.

What We MeasureThe four things we track in every answer
01
Answer Share
How often a bank is named in the answers for a category. This is plain reach.
02
First-Mention Rate
How often a bank is the first name in the answer. First position carries the recommendation.
03
Citation Share
Among answers that show a source, how often a given website is the one cited.
04
Owned-Citation Rate
Out of every source cited, how often is it a bank’s own website rather than a third party?
The Main Finding
Banks were the source for 2.5 percent of citations about their own products.
Across the 250 answers, the assistants showed their work 563 times. Fourteen of those citations pointed to a bank’s own website. NerdWallet appeared in 41 percent of cited answers and Bankrate in 40 percent. When an assistant explains what a bank offers, it usually leans on a review site to do the explaining.
2.5%
of the 563 cited sources pointed to a bank’s own website. The other 549 pointed to review sites and news outlets writing about banks.
Exhibit 1Every source cited, 563 in total
Every square is one of the 563 sources the assistants cited across the quarter. The rust squares are the fourteen that pointed to a bank’s own website. The rest pointed to review sites and news outlets writing about banks.

A Question Worth Asking
If your own website is the source in roughly one answer out of forty about your own products, where is the story about your rates being written today?
Named Versus Chosen
Being named and being chosen are two different things.
Capital One is named in more than half of all answers, the widest reach in the study. Chase turns its reach into 28 first mentions, the most of any brand. Rocket Mortgage converts reach into first position at 54 percent, the highest rate we measured. Wells Fargo converts at 35 percent and Discover at 31.
Citi and Bank of America have already done the hard part, building presence. Citi shows up in nearly half of all card answers, and Bank of America appears in every category we tested. Both brands are one step from the top spot, and this study shows exactly which step. Reach is common. Preference is rarer, and preference is where the recommendation lives.
Exhibit 2Share of all 250 answers
Read by reach. The tag counts how many times the bank was the first name across all 250 answers. Capital One holds the widest reach; Chase leads on first names.

A Question Worth Asking
For every answer that names your brand, how often are you the first name a customer reads?
Who Gets Cited
Two websites are cited more than any others.
NerdWallet and Bankrate lead the field, ahead of Forbes, CNBC, and the national news outlets. The review sites earned that position with fast pages, direct answers, and rate tables that stay current. The same qualities are available to any bank that chooses to publish that way.
Exhibit 3Share of the 179 cited answers
Share of the 179 answers that showed a source. When an assistant backs up a claim about a bank, it usually points to a review site.

The assistants split on transparency. Perplexity showed a source in all fifty of its answers and Copilot in 48. Claude showed 40 and ChatGPT 38. Gemini showed three. Where sources appear, the review sites collect the credit.

For Your Leadership Team
Questions for your SLT.
1
When a customer asks an assistant about a product you sell, whose words describe it, yours or a review site’s?
2
You are already named often. What would it take to be the first name instead of the third?
3
Do you know which assistants your customers use, and how each one talks about you?
4
Right now, the review sites tell your rate story. Where would you want that story to start?
5
A quarter from now, which of these numbers do you want to have moved, and by how much?
The Bottom Line
Customers already ask assistants about money, and the assistants already answer. The reach numbers say the big brands show up. The citation numbers say the review sites do the describing. Both numbers can move, and the four metrics in this study make the movement measurable. Treat the answer as a channel, put a number on where you stand today, and publish pages that deserve the citation.
Earn the citation, and your story runs in your own words.
